My friend and I, who have I known for a
couple of years, were driving to Austin, TX to visit friends who we have known
through church and always kept in contact with them. As we were getting of the
freeway to get onto the feeder there was a couple who were asking for money and
I was not trying to judge on their appearance but it seemed to me that they
needed money even the smallest amounts so it seemed easy for me to reach down
my pocket and pull out some leftover change but I couldn't find any but then reached
down my back pocket to check if I had some ones I could give them and right
when I pulled out a couple ones my friend looked right at me as I was calling
the guy who needed the money and said "don't, he doesn't need the money
he's just lazy and can easily get a job." I've known my friend for a while
and I don't like arguing especially with my friends and something like doing a
great deed but I was trying to think what was so wrong doing a good deed and it
didn't take long to know what I had done was not bad but what my friend had
done was because we were both raised Catholics and we were still Catholics. We
both were taught that if someone was in need and was asking for something and
you had the opportunity then you should be the first to help and not expect anything
in return because it is better to give than to receive.
